Grow Journal vs. Field Notes: Which PDF Fits Your Library?

Whaley Genetics · October 09, 2026

A grow journal and a field notes workbook serve related purposes, but they organize information differently. Choosing between them starts with the kind of record you want to keep. Do you need recurring entries that form a timeline, or worksheets that help you examine and organize a particular observation?

A journal follows the history

The Whaley Genetics Grow Journal is a 32-page printable PDF. It includes 12 daily log pages and six weekly reviews, with space for your setup, plant roster, baseline, observations, changes, issues, and lessons.

Its strength is continuity. An entry can refer to a previous date, a photograph, or an earlier question. Over time, those references make the record easier to follow. You can repeat printable pages as needed rather than forcing every project into a single fixed number of entries. The journal is not an interactive PDF form.

Field Notes organizes closer observations

The Whaley Genetics Field Notes is a 20-page printable reference and observation workbook. It includes observation practice, measurement context, photo records, a reference glossary, source logs, plant worksheets, change records, and reflection pages.

Use the source log to distinguish a reference you read from a result you observed. Use the photo record to connect an image to its context. The value lies in the relationship between those records: a photograph, a written description, and a question that remains open.

Field Notes does not include a fixed nutrient or environmental schedule. Its purpose is organizing your records, not promising that one worksheet produces the same outcome for every reader.

How the two publications work together

You might keep the dated timeline in the journal and use Field Notes for a more detailed record of a specific observation. Refer to the worksheet from the journal entry, and use the same subject name in both. That keeps related material easy to find without copying every detail twice.

If your current records are scattered across a phone and scraps of paper, choose the format you are most likely to revisit. A simple, consistently used record is more useful than an elaborate system you abandon.

Compare the buying options

Field Notes is $6.99 and the Grow Journal is $8.99. The Companion Collection combines both PDFs, totaling 52 pages, with a short getting-started file in one ZIP download for $12.99. That is $2.99 less than buying the two workbooks separately at their current listed prices.

The Companion Collection does not include the Indoor Grow Bible. For the Bible and both workbooks, see the Complete Whaley Genetics Library. The Photo Collection is a separate publication.
